Extend spine width into a full cover planning canvas — front width, spine, full wrap width, and height, with bleed included.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose paperback or hardcover, and your trim size.
  2. Enter final or estimated page count and paper/interior type.
  3. Adjust bleed if your platform's template specifies something other than the default.
  4. Use the full wrap width and height as a starting canvas size for your cover designer.

How the estimate works

Spine width is estimated the same way as the standalone spine width calculator — page count divided by an assumed pages-per-inch figure for your paper type, with a small hardcover allowance. Front cover width is trim width plus bleed on the outer edge.

Full wrap width adds front width, spine width, and back width (front and back are treated as equal), plus bleed on both outer edges — the standard way a paperback or hardcover wrap cover is laid out before trimming.

Cover dimensions FAQ

Is this the exact template my print platform needs?

No — treat it as a planning estimate for briefing a designer. Print platforms generate exact, current cover templates based on your specific book, and you should always use that template for final files.

Why does hardcover need different dimensions?

Hardcover covers wrap around rigid boards and typically include a small additional allowance beyond the paperback-style spine calculation, plus different bleed and hinge conventions depending on the platform.

What if my page count changes after I brief my designer?

Spine width — and therefore full wrap width — shifts with page count, so re-run this calculator and share the updated numbers with your designer if your final page count changes meaningfully.
